Wax // Sealant // Coating

What are the Differences between Wax, Sealant and Coating? Well, there are a lot of Differences. We will tell you which ones that you would be interested in, though.

The reason why you want to apply Wax, Sealant or Coating is to Amplify the Gloss of the Paint and Protect the Exterior from getting damaged by: UV Rays, Contaminants and Etc.

Wax

At this time (2017), Wax is considered outdated. In fact, the first thing that we tell our customer over the phone is we don’t use Wax, ever. Here are some reasons why they are considered outdated.

  • Wax, being made from natural ingredients, has Low Melting Temperature – Approximately 200F – which would melt right off when the Vehicle is under the Sun at 12 PM.
  • Wax stains plastic and rubber trims so you have to be careful while you are applying it.
  • Unless we had better no better alternatives, applying Wax every weekend like how it used to be in the 1960s doesn’t make sense for most people, if not all.

Sealant

For most people who can’t apply Coating, Sealant remains a popular choice as Exterior Protection for Vehicles.

  • Being Synthetic, most Sealants last at least 6 months on Vehicles that are parked outside. Garage Queens will see longer Durability. Its Melting Temperature is closer to 280F – Even Black Vehicles don’t get anywhere near that Temperature in the hot Sun.
  • Surfaces that have Sealant applied to become Hydrophobic. It helps in washing the Vehicle as contaminants don’t stick to the surface very well. Thanks to that, driving in the rain becomes much safer as the water doesn’t interfere with your vision as well as the water would roll off at driving speed, allowing you to use windshield wipers less frequently.

Coating

Coating is considered to be the Best Protection in comparison to Sealant or Wax.

  • Coating is very chemically resistance. Hence, it is able to reject just about everything that tries to etch into the paint such as Water Spot and Bird Bomb which Sealant can’t even stop them from etching after 5 minutes in the Sun. With Coating, you have about 2 days before the surface gets etched, depending on which Coating was applied.
  • The Gloss from Coating is unmatched. There is also a Con. Coating amplifies the Perfection / Imperfection of the Paint. Therefore, before applying any Coating, it is crucial to have Machine Paint Polishing / Correction done Twice / 2 steps to make sure every Imperfection is Corrected / Removed. Expect a quote over $1000 – $2000 because it involves a lot of Prep Works.

Things that Wax // Sealant // Coating cannot do/fix!

Machine Paint Polishing / Correction

I get this from a lot my customers. The Auto Detailing’s industry itself is confusing with products and hype. What you are looking at is spider-webbing scratches from improper Car Washing. No amount of Wax // Sealant // Coating or the most Expensive Wax // Sealant // Coating can fix that. You can believe us on this. To fix it, Machine Paint Polishing / Correction is required. It can be expensive. It’s $500+ expensive. That is why it is important to wash the vehicle properly so that wash scratches are avoided / minimized.
