Everyone’s favorite: Automatic Car Wash

Pros of Automatic Car Wash:

  • Fast: It’s quick.
  • Cheap: Most Automatic Car Wash costs less than $20.
  • Convenient: You let the machine do the work while you sit back and watch.

Cons of Automatic Car Wash:

  • Ruining the paint: it destroys the paint’s finish by causing micro scratches onto the surface. It costs $400-$600 to restore back to perfection depending on how bad the finish has become. The process of restoration is called Machine Polishing.

  • Harsh Chemicals used: it is not uncommon that strong solutions are used to compensate for the lack of hand washing. These strong solutions break down whatever protection such as Wax or Sealant that you might have on your car. They can etch the paint causing semi-permanent damage to permanent damage which would require Multiple- Steps Machine Polishing to fix.
  • Improper drying methods: leaving fine scratches or water spots

We would recommend Hand Washing your car over taking it to an Automatic Car Wash. With that said, finding a place/person who would take the time to hand wash your car properly without scratching your car can be a challenge, especially if your car has just been Machine Polished to Perfection.

If you care about your vehicle and view it as your prided possession , having it hand washed by a professional is the best way to maintain its finish.

This is true for sport cars or anything special vehicle that the owner cares about. Work trucks… not so much.

Auto Detailing is the Art of Restoring your Vehicle to Showroom Condition; something that washing your vehicle will not get it to that level of perfection no matter how many times you have it washed. It is a Restoration Process that would:

  • Maintain your Vehicle the right way that doesn’t damage the finish. (Yes there are wrong ways to do it which will [fill in the blank] the finish.)
  • Take your Vehicle back to when it was Brand New from the Dealer.
  • Custom Detailing would bring your Vehicle Beyond Brand New – Show Car Finish.

Which depends hugely on your expectations. There is a huge difference between New Vehicle and Detailed Vehicle.

  • New Vehicle: it is new and you are the first owner. It does come with some minor Defects / Scratches that most people wouldn’t see because they are so excited about their new car. It doesn’t have any Exterior or Interior Protection. Without any Protection, the finish is going to be slowly damaged by the Sun. Have you ever seen Clear Coat Failure on older vehicles? When that happens, there is nothing anyone could do but to Repaint the whole Panel or the entire Vehicle. Most headlights will be oxidized in 3 years if neglected – not cheap to restore properly. The list goes on. 
  • Detailed Vehicle: Protections are applied to protect the surface from Element Assaults. For Custom Detailing, the paint would be Machine Polished to Perfection, which even New Vehicles do come with Imperfections / Scratches whether you believe it or not.

There are many aspects of Auto Detailing and Car Washing is only a part of it.
